What She Couldn't Give Me

Six Sessions

For anyone raised and socialised as a daughter, carrying a difficult relationship with their mother, whether she is still here or not, whether you are still in contact or not.

Multiple generations of women in profile, ancestors faded into the background behind mothers and daughters seated in front, one holding a young child
What this is

Maybe your mother did her best with what she had, and it still wasn't enough. Maybe she couldn't be soft with you because no one had ever been soft with her. Maybe you have spent years explaining her away to everyone, including yourself, and you are tired.

This group is not about deciding whether your mother was good or bad. It is about naming what actually happened between you, honestly, and understanding what got passed down to you because of it.

The wound is inherited, not invented.
Worth knowing going in

You do not have to villainise your mother to be here, and you do not have to defend her either. Both things can be true: she may have been shaped by her own pain, and by her culture's pressure on women to be strong and silent, and that still does not erase what it cost you. This group holds both without asking you to pick a side.

Session two is built specifically to name the structural weight behind that conditioning, migration, racism, patriarchy, poverty, whatever context genuinely shaped your mother and shaped what she was able to give you. This group is for anyone with a difficult maternal relationship, whatever your background, and it makes real room for that context rather than treating every story as identical.

Who this is for
  • You've noticed yourself repeating patterns with people you love that you swore you'd never repeat.
  • You're the one who holds everything together, and you're not sure when you learned that, or who taught you.
  • Your relationship with your mother is complicated in ways that are hard to explain to people who had an easier one.
  • You want to understand this without needing the relationship itself to be fixed or resolved first.
The six sessions

The arc

Session 01

Naming It Without Betraying Her

Orientation, and permission to name a difficult relationship honestly, without needing to villainise your mother to do it.

Session 02

What Shaped Her Before You

The structural weight your mother carried, migration, racism, patriarchy, poverty, whatever context shaped her own conditioning, named specifically, not glossed over as generic "her own stuff."

Session 03

What Got Passed Down

Naming the specific patterns, self-sacrifice, self-silencing, the pressure to appear strong, that travelled from her to you.

Session 04

The Ways You've Already Repeated It

Honest, non-shaming work on where these patterns already show up in your own relationships.

Session 05

Grief That Doesn't Need an Ending

Holding the grief of what wasn't given, without needing it resolved to move forward.

Session 06

Choosing Differently, On Purpose

Closing with what you actually want to carry forward, and what you're finally allowed to set down.

Where this fits

This group does not stand alone. It often overlaps with other work already offered, worth exploring alongside it or afterward.
