What Drugs and Alcohol Were Holding

Six Sessions

Understanding what substance use was actually doing for you. Not to judge it, but to finally see it clearly.

What this is

Substance use is rarely just about the substance. Underneath it there is usually something real being managed. Exhaustion, grief, dysregulation, the weight of never feeling safe enough to put anything down. This group starts from that understanding, not from shame.

Together with others doing the same work, you will look at what it was actually holding for you, where that need came from, and what genuinely helps, on your own terms.

It wasn't weakness. It was doing exactly what it was built to do.
How we approach this

This is not an abstinence-only program. What moving forward looks like is defined with you, not handed to you in advance. Some people are working toward stopping entirely, some toward a different relationship with substance use, some are still figuring that out. All of that is welcome here.

Who this is for
  • You have noticed a pattern and want to understand it, not just white-knuckle through it.
  • You are tired of being asked "why can't you just stop" by people who have never asked what it was helping you survive.
  • You have tried programs that felt like a script, and want something that starts from your actual life instead.
  • You are not in crisis, or you are. Either way, you are welcome to start here.

The arc

Session 01

Understanding the Function, Not Just the Substance

Orientation, and reframing substance use as a response to real pressure, not a moral failing.

Session 02

What It Was Actually Doing For You

Naming the specific thing being managed, numbness, exhaustion, dysregulation, grief, without judgement.

Session 03

Where It Came From

Tracing how it gets passed down through families and shaped by the pressures around you.

Session 04

The System Wasn't Built to Help You Stop

Naming real barriers to support honestly, stigma, access, and the systems that make this harder than it should be.

Session 05

Building What Actually Works

Practical strategies matched to what you actually identified in session two, not a generic template.

Session 06

Moving Forward, Without Judgment

Closing with a plan that is actually yours, and ongoing support, not a finish line.
